Evil Eye & Envy (Ayn)

Evidence for the existence of envy:

Allah says:

Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them. (Al-Baqarah 2:109)
And Allah says:
Or do they envy men (Muhammad and his followers) for what Allah has given them of His Bounty? Then, We had already given the family of Ibrahim the Book and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah – Divine Revelation to those Prophets not written in the form of a book), and conferred upon them a great kingdom. (Al-Nisa 4:54)
And He says:
And from the evil of the envier when he envies. (Al-Falaq 113:5)
The concept of ayn:

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, “Indeed, he is mad.” 68:51

Ibn Katheer uses this verse as evidence that ‘ayn is real and has the ability to effect people, since Allah mentions ‘they will make you slip with their eye’. An incident happened at the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when the Quraysh asked some people (who were known to give the evil eye to another which could cause illness, death or some other effect) to put it on the Prophet ﷺ. Allah azza wa jal protected the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from those who were intent on destroying him with Al ‘ayn.

Ibn Qayyim mention in his book ‘Zad al ma’ad’, that some people have denied the effects of ‘ayn, and he describe these people as arrogant and with no knowledge.

According to some scholars the concept of effecting a person with ‘ayn, i.e. where the effect of a person’s gaze can have a physical effect on someone, can be likened to the effect of when a person walks into a room and they were to be embarrassed by people looking at him, perhaps his face might change colour out of shyness or embarrassment. Another analogy could be where someone sees someone they fear and they get pale in the face. Ibn Qayyim describes it as a physical or spiritual effect that leaves the eye and effects the human being.
Hadith related to the Evil Eye

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree (Qadr), it would be the evil eye…” That is if anything else were to beat the decree of Allah it would be the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and can bring down a person from a high mountain.” (Sahih al jamia 4146). What is meant here is that the evil eye follows a person, by Allah’s will, until it causes him to fall from a high mountain or another understanding is Al ‘Ayn is so powerful it could bring down the highest mountain. Therefore we must consider the effects it can have on the human body.

The Prophet ﷺ came out and travelled with him towards Makkah, until they were in the mountain pass of al-Kharaar in al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef did ghusl, and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. ‘Aamir ibn Rabee’ah, one of Banu ‘Adiyy ibn Ka’b looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said: “I have never seen such beautiful skin as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” and Sahl fell to the ground. They went to Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl, because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “Aamir ibn Rabee’ah looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ‘Aamir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessing for him. (TabarakAllah)” Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he washed his face, hands, forearms, knees and the sides of his feet, and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him, and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him, then Sahl got up and joined the people and there was nothing wrong with him.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “The influence of an evil eyes is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take bath.’ Sahih Muslim Hadith 5427. So the person who has been afflicted by ‘Ayn should try and get the water of the person who has afflicted him with it.

Umm Salaamah said that the Prophet ﷺ once saw a young girl, who had a certain expression on her face and said ‘Seek an Islamic prayer formula for her because she is touched by the evil eye’. (Bukhari)
Definition of Evil Eye

There are different types of Evil Eye;

1. Al ‘Ayn (العين) is defined as the envious eye from someone who may love you, or know you and not have evil intentions.

2. Al Hasad (الحســـد) is defined as the eye from someone who hates you or dislikes you from.

3. An Nafs (النفس) is defined as the envious eye you can put on yourself.

4. An Nathara (النظرة) is the envious eye that come from the jinn.
The type of evil eye:

1. The eye of a human originates from a human being and the evidence for this is the saying of the messenger of Allah (SAW) narrated by Imaam Malik in his Muatta “The one who knows in great detail his brother affects can harm him”.

2. The eye of the jinn; this originates from a jinn and the evidence for this is the narration of Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) who said the prophet (SAW) saw in her house a slave girl with a discoloration on her face and said perform ruqyah for her for she has been afflicted by the eye of a jinn.
The Effect of Evil Eye

Sheikh al Habashi says that Al ‘Ayn has a tremendous amount of power. It has an Influence in all areas of a person’s life religious or worldly, the senses or moral character. Some of the effects are summarised below:

Effect on the minds: IQ, wit, memory, ability to focus, understanding and assimilation.Effect on the livelihood: Wealth, Income etc.
Effect on beauty: hair, face, skin colour, the body etc.
Influence on religion: worship, humility, character, Integrity etc.
Effect on a person’s morality: modesty, truthfulness, manners, morals, humility, good characteristics etc.
Effect on marital and family life: happiness, effect between couples – pregnancy, childbirth and miscarriages, raising and loving children etc.

Effect on inanimate objects: cars, all kinds of devices, gold, women’s cosmetic application or products.

The Arabic linguistically of al’ayn, is used to specify/single out a person or to single him/her out as being afflicted by the evil eye and that he is known as al a’in and the affected by the evil eye is singled out and specified by becoming deficient in some way and the one whom is affected by the eye al- ma’ayoon.

Ibn Al Qayyim ( May Allah have mercy on him ) has said in his book Zaad al maad: “It is the arrow that is taken out from the soul of the envious individual, the one whom causes the affliction of the eye, and is then fired upon the one whom is being envied and the subject of the evil eye. This individual will be affected sometimes and manage to escape it other times. If one encounters this and is exposed to it then there will be no protection from its effect, and it is imperative if one encounters this to take care and prepare themselves with best defense and not allow it to be implanted upon them and so that these arrows from the envious individual do not effect them. Sometimes these arrows return to the one whom they belong and this archery makes the envious individual the same, one is from the physical actions of the body and the other from the soul”.
Evidence from the Sunnah

Al-Tirmidhi narrated that the freed slave of Al-Zubayr (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing upon Him) said:
”The disease of the nations who came before you has started to spread among you: jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread (the greeting of) Salam amongst yourselves.”
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing upon Him) said:
”My Ummah will be stricken with the disease of the other nations.” They said: “What is the disease of the other nations?” He (Peace and Blessing upon Him) said: “Insolence, arrogance, accumulation (of wealth), competition in worldly gains, mutual hatred and envy, until there will be wrongdoing and then killing.”

When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.”

Washing/Bath for Ayn:

1. The Sunnah method is to wash yourself from the water (from their wudho) from the person who gave you the ayn (if the identity of the person is known)

2. If you don’t know who gave the ayn, or their water is not available, then wash yourself with water that is recited on called Roqya water as many times a day as possible- 3-4 times is good,

al-Saheehayn, ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to tell me to recite ruqyah (incantation) for protection against the evil eye.

3. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah once daily (or twice or three times a day if possible).

~For those of us that struggle with the recitation itself or with difficulty completing the recitation during one session, brother AN advised that we can listen to an audio recitation and put our finger on the words on the Mushaf following then recite.

4. Recite Ayat ul Kursi, Surah Al-Falaq and Al Nas

throughout the day (even while doing chores, shopping etc

5. Recite verses of Ayn (2) If you were reading and/or memorizing Quran before you were afflicted, then continue to read and/or memorize the same amount of juz with the intention of Roqya, in addition to above

6. Listen to the Ruqya audio Al Ayn

7. If the Ayn is related to education, then add Al Ilm audio. Signs of this are you don’t want to pick up the books etc

8. Daily Adhkar are very important

*NOTE: If one has Ayn only but no possession then just carry out above noted program.
